El éxito en 1837 de Estampas de señoritas de William Caswall, un humorista que escribía con seudónimo, empujó a Charles Dickens a publicar una réplica anónima, Estampas de caballeretes (1838), dedicada a «las señoritas del Reino Unido». En ella acusaba amablemente a Caswall de cierta misoginia y se disponía a ampliar el repertorio al género masculino. En 1840 continuó el ciclo con Estampas de parejitas, preocupado por el peligro de «superpoblación» que podría acarrear el ejemplo del matrimonio de la reina Victoria. En conjunto, estas tres series de estampas componen un sensacional cuadro satírico de la juventud victoriana.
