Creatures of light and darkness. And great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between Good and Evil. And to each generation was born a creature of Light and a creature of Darkness. So, we're down to 11½ hours of daylight and already I can feel the (undiagnosed, probably not clinical, but you never know) seasonal affective disorder setting in. But they themselves are pure, as is the world made from the four sacred elements of earth, air, fire and water. There's also a few examples in the games themselves, like the normal / ice / plate Parasites in Prime and the light / dark creatures in Echoes. There was magic then, nobility, and unimaginable cruelty. Hence, of course the Eschaton's perfectly-reasonable (for certain values of "reasonable") prohibition on violating the light-cone rule. Add the fleeting twilight nights (we get maybe 4 hours of complete full dark at that time of year) and the pervasive random weirdness—you can go shopping dressed as a Dalek or a 17th century French aristocrat and . Humans are the creatures of light and darkness, the battleground of primal forces seeking to defeat one another. It is some time before you encounter your first creature, and this is vital to the fiendish logic that makes Amnesia tick. The torturously slow-burning first thirty minutes or so act to lull you into a fragile but unavoidable and going insane leaves you much more vulnerable to the creatures. The most cogent criticism of Roger Zelazny's Creatures of Light and Darkness is that it has a very similar premise to Lord of Light, published two years previous. Duality of light and dark features heavily in Amnesia, but the inspired nuance of its execution leaves Alan Wake's cheap theatrics quivering in the shadows.
